Mount Kenya is MOST Famous Because of the Snow on the Peaks?... or the Prisoners Who Climbed It?
Mount Kenya is famous for both... The events are part of it's history. When this mountain was first explored by the Europeans, Johann Ludwig Krap reported snow at the peaks (actually there are glaciers up there-the mountain is an important source of water for much of Kenya) of course back then in the mid 1800s the scientific community doubted his claims.
It's is the second highest peak in Africa. (Mt. Kilimanjaro is the hightest peak.) Look, you can see it from miles away... This is a view from Aberdare. © Deborah Benbrook | Dreamstime.com It took some 50 years after its discovery before anyone reached the peaks (there are two primary peaks-Batian (5,199 metres (17,057 ft)), Nelion (5,188 metres (17,021). The various explorers had 'trouble' with the local people (Tompson may have simply been scared)...another had trouble with illness and another couldn't get through the forest to really get started. There are many stories... and the prisoners?
Three Italian Prisoners of War, who were being held in Nanyuki, and escaped to climb the mountain before returning to the camp and "escaping" back in. No Picnic on Mount Kenya tells the story of the prisoners' exploit. If you're a climber or want to be the are several walking trails, (it'll take a few days) and there's a range of accommodations from economy to luxurious. The Serena Mountain Lodge has been rated as one of the
Top Resorts
in Africa. ("Conde Nast Traveler") There is also a range of wildlife, and plants. A hundred years after the Europeans found it the government of Kenya decided to protect it- first as a forest preserve, then a National Park. Located in central Kenya this dormant volcano is just north of Nairobi the Capital.
