Don't Let the Kenya Weather Create Problems. Getting Stuck in the Mud May Be the Least of Your Worries...

Kenya weather and the tropical climate is defined more by the rainy seasons than the temperature.

If you are going on a Safari in Kenya July through September are your best times to go and give you the best chance of seeing the Great Migration of the Wildebeest, Zebra and Gazelle.

There are two rainy seasons:

  • the long rains and the short rains.
  • The long rains start in late March and continue till June.
  • The short rains start in October and continue through December.
This creates three distinct tourist seasons:

  • High Season; this is from July to September and from December through March. The weather is dry and the roads are accessible to the various Game Parks and National Reserves.

  • Low Season; April-June. Long rains are experienced about this time. If you want to travel at this time, you may need a 4-wheel drive. Some roads may be closed or impassable- Check with your Tour Operator.

  • Mid Season; October-November.You get intermittent short rains at this time.

North of the equator, in the Northern Regions of Kenya it rains very little.

Regardless of when you go here are some thoughts on safari clothing

The Kenya weather influences Everything in Kenya-

  • the crops,
  • the wildlife,
  • the quality of the roads.

You might think that in Kenya the weather would be warm everyday. After all Kenya is located on the equator. And it is usually warm along the coast. The average temperature is 80 F.

Move inland and the altitude starts to have an effect.
Nairobi has temperatures that vary from 57-70 F. (21-26 degrees centigrade) and Mt. Kenya is snow capped.

If you're visiting Kenya during the rainy seasons
    consider a 4 wheel drive or hire a driver-guide.

    Vehicle maintenance is important,
(If you are renting a vehicle ask about maintenance. Do they have records? Are they accurate?)

August and September and January and February are the driest months.
