There Are Over 40 Kenya Tribes and

The Maasai Are Among the Best Known of the Kenya Tribes

And Enkai, god of the Maasai, Gave all the Cattle in the World Just to Them. That is what the Maasai believe.

Enkai gave them the cattle. They love their cattle. A greeting might be, "How are your cattle today?"

The Maasai are a pastoral people- they raise livestock. The have donkeys, goats, cattle. Their diet consists largely of cow's milk and blood which they draw from the neck of bulls. They have, more than some tribes, kept their own culture and way of life.

They are a semi-nomadic people. They build small villages of huts made of sticks and cow dung as they make their journeys about the Serengeti Plains of Kenya and Tanzania.

The massai are known as fierce warriors.

It is believed that the Maasai once lived in the Nile River valley and migrated to the Kenya /Tanzania area, and the Serengeti Plains, also sometimes referred to as Maasailand.

They drove out the tribes that were already there.

Here a maasai warrior shows scars from battling a lion, (Take a look at the jewelry he's wearing.) The beading and the 'pendants' attached to his belt and necklace are elaborate. This is not 'costume' jewelry. It is personal. It this warriors' belt

Today modern forces threaten the traditional Maasai way of life.It has become more difficult to raise cattle. Game Reserves, roads, the tourist industry have changed the landscape. While they still raise cattle many also work in the tourist industry, sell arts and crafts, and farm and fish.

The people of the Samburu tribe are closely related to the Maasai. You could call them cousins. The language of the Samburu and the Maasai are closely related. Their dress is similar as is their way of life.

The Samburu are also semi-nomadic and are keepers of cattle, sheep and goats. They live north of the equator in the area of the Samburu game Reserve and are a small percent of the population of Kenya.

The Kikuyu tribe have long lived in the area of Nairobi. After Joseph Thomson (the Thomson Gazelle is named after him) explored the possible trade routes from Mombasa to Lake Victoria and Europeans began exploring more of the interior of Kenya it was the Kikuyu that benefited from the exposure to the European culture and skills in commerce and trade.
