Kenya Art, Soapstone Carvings, and Gifts to Bring Home
Pick up some Kenya Art, Souvenirs, Soapstone, Trinkets and Gifts when you go to Kenya. There are many items you can buy that are made in Kenya. Here is a mortar and pestle made from soapstone.

Painted Mortar and Pestle of Soapstone bought as a Gift for GranddadThe mortar and pestle was made in Kisii, where local tradesmen and artists work. We also have a couple of lock boxes, and some simple figurines that are made of soapstone. More expensive and complex sculptures can be bought in cities larger than Kisii. Soapstone is relatively inexpensive, it makes very nice keepsakes and gifts. It is fragile- and heavy. Go to Kenya and bring it home in your Carry on Luggage. You can negotiate the price. Pay what it is worth to you and it also depends on the supply. You can also get a lot of nice gifts, souvenirs from tribes of Maasai. They set up their own little flea markets in various locations.

You can get jewelry, decorated belts, watchbands, key rings, gourds, blankets, throws that are very nice. Prices vary:You can get nice hand beaded belts, watchbands and key ringsat very reasonable prices. If you want something more elaborate-you will have to "haggle" with them and they may not want to sell it. The nicest jewelry, belts etc. is personal to them. It is elaborate and they wear it. It will cost you a Lot more. 4-5 times as much. It is best to barter with the Maasai. At the very least negotiate the price. Go just across the border to Tanzania and you can pick up fabric to make into wall hangings, or make into dresses or use as tablecloths as we have done in the past.

-------Fabric from Tanzania made into a wall hanging. ---------There is a wide assortment of Kenya art that you can buy. You can get masks many places and art work by local Kenyans in Nairobi and in other towns. The best of it is a reflection of their land, wildlife, and way of life.
