Kenya's History of Coffee and the French Holy Ghost Fathers

The origin and history of coffee may have started in Ethiopia but for Kenya AA you have to go over 2000 km. (over 1000 miles) from Kenya to Reunion Island, which is east of Madagascar.

Enter the French Holy Ghost Fathers - a Catholic order with a history of serving the poor.
This group had a presence at Reunion Island in the 1840s where they worked with newly freed slaves who had worked the island's coffee plantations.
In the 1860s they began working in East Africa where they were buying men and women out of slavery in Zanzibar. In 1893 they brought coffee trees from Reunion Island to the farms around Nairobi. From there the growing area spread to the high plateaus around Mt. Kenya, the Aberdare Mt. Range, Kisii, Nyanza, Bungoma, Nakuru and Kericho.
