People, Culture, Tribes of Kenya 99% of the population of Kenya are native to African. The population is diverse with 40+ tribes and as many languages.The official languages are
Swahili and English.
While it is not necessary to learn Swahili before traveling to Kenya, it is a nice gesture to learn some of the common words and phrases of the native language...Wherever you may be traveling.
As you travel away from the larger cities where the population is a diverse mix you find more tribal languages.
Major tribes are the Kikuya, Luhya, Luo, Kalenjin, Kisii, and Meru. The better known tribe of
the Maasai
is a small percent of the population as are the Turkana and Swahili.
