Aberdare National Park has its Place in the Aberdare Mountains and History

Aberdare National Park, Is One of the Top Five Safari Parks in Kenya
Located in the Aberdare mountain range, this Park has thick woodland forests, waterfalls and ice cold streams filled with trout.

When you go dress in layers and take your long underwear. It gets chilly in the mountains.

Feb. 1952: Princess Elizabeth was taking a holiday, a safari in Kenya, at the famous Treetops Hotel. On the evening of the 5th she climbed the steps of the hotel to view the wildlife below...
...the next morning, with the death of her father, King George VI, she was Queen of the British Isles.

Aberdare is home to two well known treehouse hotels,
the 'Ark' and 'Treetops'.

The original Treetops (inspired by the play-"Peter Pan"), burned in the late 1950s and was rebuilt on a larger scale.

The Ark and Treetops have walkways and accommodations raised above the ground beside floodlit waterholes with salt licks. You don't need to go on a drive to find wildlife on a safari here because they come to you.

Stay close to the waterholes at the lodges and you will see
elephant, lion, hyena, various antelope and rhino.
Lodging attendants will even ring a bell or buzzer to let you know you got 'visitors'.

There is also a viewing blind below ground level which gives you some unique views as the animals quench their thirst.

Joseph Thomson named the mountain range after the Royal Geographical Society's President, Lord Aberdare, in 1884.
The 'scramble for Africa' continued as a major theme throughout his Presidency (1880-1887)and in his later years he had strong interests in the promotion of education within Wales and was a key player in the foundation of the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire.
