Lake Nakuru National Park and the lesser or Pink Flamingos

Joe visited Lake Nakuru National Park. He told me he'd been to Masa Mara 5 or 6 times and wanted to go see Lake Nakuru and the pink Flamingos. It's not far off the beaten path.160 km (100 mi.) northwest of Nairobi.

Flamingo Lake Lake Nakuru is a favorite spot for the lesser or pink flamingo.

The exact color or shade of pink of these birds depends on the food source- basically plankton(a primary food of whales and seals). For lack of a better word whatever forms of micro-organisms that are dropped in or form in the lake ...
Rumor has it that there are sometimes more flamingos than lake...
The size of the lake varies based on the rainfall and other circumstances- like flooding, farming, pollution.

A place for birdwatching

The park is sometimes referred to as a "birdwatchers paradise".Since the lake is there there are other wading birds-the giant or goliath heron and varieties of storks - as well as pied kingfisher and eagles...and of course there is

More wildlife to see.

The park is also a wildlife sanctuary for the black rhino and there are white rhinos, the Rothschild giraffe and Waterbuck

Predators include
the lion, cheetah and rather elusive leopard.

Terrain

The park includes the lake, cliff-side views, and areas of forest.

The park is- one of the older parks (1961) in Kenya and is managed by Kenya Wildlife Service.

Primary activities

birdwatching, game viewing and camping.
while I am not a real big fan of camping... you might be

Several campsites are available and
there are also a few lodges-
Lake Nakuru Lodge and a "self catering" lodge through Kenya Wildlife Service which might make you experience a bit more pleasant and relaxing.

A nice place for a day long safari or two.
