Passports

Don't Let This Happen to You...

She was eating dinner at one of the fine restaurants in Nairobi when she just had that nagging feeling. "Where is my Passport? I thought I had it right here.. No its not here... maybe in the hotel room or in my luggage." It wasn't there either. She couldn't find it. A week later... still in Nairobi, Two weeks later...still in Nairobi.So the first Kenya travel tip is...

• Make 2 Copies of your passport- the page with your picture and the date issued and the passport number. Take one in your carry on luggage if you are flying. Leave the other copy with a friend or family member at home.If you do lose or misplace your passport. it will be much easier to get it replaced.

  His Bags Were Packed and Ready to Go...

  ...But at the airport the clerk said
  "You only have 3 months left on your current passport, Sorry, You can't go."

  If your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival or planned departure date go ahead and get a new passport.

  • Put a copy of your itinerary in your checked luggage. Take another copy in you carry on luggage. Include your name and contact information.

  • Take an extra change of clothes or two in your carry on luggage.

    If you are flying into Kenya and have connecting flights it is not uncommon for your luggage to arrive later than you. It will generally arrive, maybe on the next flight and in Kenya that generally means the next day.

  Health

  If you take medications -and you will need to take malaria pills- take them in your carry on luggage! The same for extra eyeglasses and contact lens.

  A couple of months before you leave, get your passport,
  your Yellow Fever inoculation and card.
  You cannot get into Kenya without them.

  You will also need inoculations for

  • hepatitis,
  • typhoid (pills or shot), and
  • malaria pills.

  Check with your doctor or travel clinic on all shots, medications, before you leave.

  While in Kenya, Drink Only bottled water;(Ice should also be make from bottled water), and take your malaria pills and any prescribed medications you need.

  Money

  Pack Lightly. travel lightly. Take some clothes, shoes that you can barter with or give away. And some gifts that you can use for trading.

  Bartering and Bargaining are a way of life in Kenya.

  Currency

• Take crisp new large bills for your visa and to exchange currencies. You can take a Visa debit card and get shillings from the Automatic Teller Machines. Your bank will charge you a small fee for the transaction but it will be less than with currency exchange dealers.

Avoid the Beggars and Hawkers that may be around the airports and public places. Your best place to buy souvenirs and keepsakes are from locals in small villages and roadside stands. But you must use your own judgment. You can buy from souvenir shops at hotels and lodges but you have less bargaining power.
